One thing I learned this week: Chocolate Layer Cake from Toojay’s is not, I repeat NOT, a fat burner. Take my advice. The same is true for Exceedingly Over-Frosted Strawberry Cupcakes. Not a good weight-loss strategy, people!
It was a birthday weekend for my niece, and she had a lovely selection of desserts at her family dinner. That was doubly bad news for me as the night progressed! Even though I had been losing weight this week, in the end I flatlined again (actually, minus .5 if you believe in decimals) for my final weigh-in of the week yesterday morning.
And I know who to blame. Me.
Of course, afterward, I’m thinking why didn’t I just bring one of my NutriSystem desserts with me to the party? I knew there would be cake. Chocolate is chocolate. I was not thinking ahead.
Despite this noticeably tasty gaffe, I have been putting a lot of thought into what I eat in addition to the NutriSystem meals.
I love the NutriSystem food. It is delicious. The NutriSystem Breakfast Burrito (at left) is my new favorite start to the day. I wish I could order 28 of them to cover the entire month’s worth of breakfasts. The burrito has eggs, red and yellow peppers, and beans in a flour tortilla. Beans and eggs combined are my perfect breakfast, who knew?
Every time I pop an entrée into the microwave or the toaster oven, I am so thankful about the ease of preparation too. What a time saver -- even for a stay-at-home mom.
But the program also requires you to supplement the NutriSystem entrees with lots of veggies and fruits. Last week, I was falling into a rut with my go-to additions (salad, banana, yogurt; salad, banana, yogurt; you get it).
Then I got an email from the folks at RealAge, with a pictorial of nine foods that may have accelerated fat-burning qualities. I decided to bring some of these veggies and fruits into my supplemental mix, so we’ll see what happens next week! Here’s what I added or switched out starting yesterday:
Breakfast: Half a grapefruit for my fruit serving. I had been having applesauce or a small banana.
Snack: A pear.
Dinner: For my salad, I am mixing my own dressing of safflower oil and apple cider vinegar, with Italian seasoning and a small sprinkle of sunflower seeds. The dressing and seeds count as my “fat.” Or, with purchased fat-free dressing, crush six whole almonds and sprinkle for some serious zing! (My choice, Blue Diamond Bold Flavor Wasabi & Soy Sauce Almonds.)
Turns out, changing it up is good for the taste buds. Let's see if it's good for my waistline. And as Week 7 unfolds, I sincerely hope to avoid any chocolate layer cakes.
